In the newly-built offices of The Rand Daily Mail in Johannesburg, where I was working as a journalist, a furious row about space broke out between News and Advertising. Then the builders confessed that they'd sealed off a room and forgotten to add a door! I thought: 'A secret room - I must write a novel about it.' Years later I did. It's called 'Seeking Clemency'.
