Hi Lois - Flowers of Vashnoi is clearly in conversation with The Mountains of Mourning. Both Stories are heartbreaking, and while the experience Miles had strongly informed his path of maturation from adolescence to adulthood, how does story in Vanoshi affect Ekatarin in the long term?

Ekaterin is already mature when the story opens; no YA heroine, she. So she has much less "character development" to do at age 35 than Miles had at 20. The experience will inform and enlarge her abilities as Lady Vorkosigan, going forward. Because Countess is a job description as well as a title.

You've said already that "Vor is is an aristocratic prefix"; and there's a plenty of places where it gets lost (like ImpMil academy: "Kosigan, Kostolic"). But there's one name that always stroke me odd: Vorobyev, which sounds like a normal Russian family name (from "Vorobey", meaning "Sparrow"). Is it supposed to be "unprefixed" to? Or is it actually a non-Vor-name?

I just got caught up listening to the last three hours of the audiobook "The Warrior's Apprentice" after the bedtime I was aiming for. Shame on you for making it so riveting. Seriously though, after Shards of Honour (Barrayar was unavailable, so I'm still waiting for it), it was a fantastic ... listen, I suppose (seeing as I didn't technically read it).
