Goodreads asked Brett McKay:

How do you get inspired to write?

Brett McKay My head is always filled with concepts. I try to come up with a great "what if" idea, branch out from there and see if it has any wings. Inspirations come from everywhere. Sometimes from a good movie or book you read, to a news story, or you meet interesting people and it stirs up ideas. Or I'm in a strange place, like I did some work in remote areas in Arkansas, and I came up with a bunch. Usually when I sit down to write a tale, I find that I utilize pieces of inspiration from everywhere, even for other story ideas, and they end up melding together. Then again, if you meditate, and listen closely, your muse will tell you what to write.
