Goodreads asked David William Pearce:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

David William Pearce The Buttman books are the result of a book I started to write and then shelved because I didn't think at the time it was something I could write effectively. One of the minor characters in that story was bored with his job and wanted to be a writer of gritty pulp fiction. "It'll be Monk Buttman, hard-boiled private dick," he tells a co-worker. I thought that was funny, but I also love that genre and I wondered as I was stuck figuring out how to write that book, so I asked myself, what would a Buttman book be like if I was serious? To that end I started writing about a guy with a silly name, which he didn't care about, and how he gets caught up in this plot to steal a cache of secret money that goes terribly wrong. And I enjoyed it so much I just kept going.
