I don't honestly know. Things just... come to me. It could be an image, a turn of phrase, or even just a single word that just starts to bounce around in my mind. But once it starts percolating in my head, it's not leaving until it's become SOMETHING... short story, novel, etc. Gets a bit noisy in there.
