Read, read, read. I'm talking about books by authors you admire. There are craft books on writing and you can learn a great deal from them but by reading an author's work you learn so much and are more entertained. My most influential reads have been The Catcher in the Rye, by JD Salinger and the series, Childhood, Boyhood and Youth by Leo Tolstoy.
