Stanley Michael Hurd Dear Qnpoohbear,

I disliked Lady Susan from the first time I read her, although I get the impression JA rather enjoyed writing her, and I wanted to take a shot at her. As for her being obvious, in my life I have missed things much more obvious than how I portrayed her, so I gave Darcy credit for being sharper than I am. Others have made the same comment where Miss Bingley was concerned, but there, too, I wrote Darcy as being no thicker about such things than I was. On your last question, I can only say my mind didn’t travel in that direction – it was never a thought. Perhaps I subconsciously believed him to be already so captivated by Elizabeth that no other would do, but, in truth, I think it just wasn’t among the possibilities I considered. Have you considered (or are you considering) taking a stab at it?
