Goodreads asked Neil McGarry:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Neil McGarry Honestly, I feel like there are only three things any writer can do: 1) write a good book; 2) promote the hell out of it; 3) hope to get lucky. That sounds so pessimistic but IMO it's true. Some good books are ignored and some bad books are celebrated, and I don't know the magic formula that determines which.

I *can* say, however, that one should never assume that what is published is what is good. Publishers are a money-making venture first and foremost, and they'll publish whatever they think will sell, period.
