Write - write - write. Make certain you entertain your projected readers, and get a professional critique of your work before you even attempt to publish or submit to a publisher. Also, make sure you are submitting to a publisher who specializes in your genre - i.e. If they specialize in non-fiction, don't submit fiction - no matter what genre.
