I love the gothic alternate realities of Neil Gaiman, Susanna Clarke and Erin Morgenstern. Planes of existence that lurk behind and beyond our own, and the ability to travel between them at will.
If I ended up in such a place, I'd totally be a side-character for many others' Hero's Journeys. Like an Ollivander of words and illustrations. Someone who keeps an odd old spellbookshop, and conjures swords and armour and fantastical beasties from other worlds for paying adventurers, from higher realms buried between the pages of an ever-moving library.
