Enjoyed Hotel Florida. You mentioned Gerda Taro had a boy friend Will Chardack. I worked with a Dr. William Chardack at the Buffalo VA. He was famous as the first person to implant a permanent pacemaker in a human. He was the right age. I'm trying to find out more about him. His obit didn't mention anything about his background. Any sources? Thank you. Ross McRonald MD

I wonder. When was this? Chardack might have emigrated to the US; but Taro’s biographer, Irma Schaber, interviewed him in East Germany in the 1980’s I think. She never indicated that he’d left. But she was pretty close-mouthed about her research, and the documentation in her book is not helpful about the location of archives or people she cites. Maybe he was here all along? An intriguing mystery. If I weren’t writing another book I’d chase after it... do you want to?

Not a question? but a thank you for Everybody Was So Young. Just finished it with tears and much joy. Read Honoria’s book twice in the 80s. Your book made me love the Murphys more, made me angrier at Hemingway’s betrayal, made me fed up with Fitzgerald’s childishness. Hi Amanda, Loved “Everybody Was So Young.” Bittersweet. Beautiful. Who doesn’t wish they were there at one time or another? No one I think. You’re very clever. How do you do it?
