Goodreads asked Sarah Todd Taylor:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Sarah Todd Taylor I knew that I wanted to write a book about a girl who led a double life, and I knew that I wanted her to be creative. I'd loved writing the Max series with my crime solving cat, and I love secret codes, so I wondered about writing a spy series. Alice was very nearly a milliner, then a dressmaker, but I finally decided to make her Paris' most talented baker because I wanted her to be present at all the sorts of events where she might be able to pick up clues from important people who won't realise why she's really there. I had tremendous fun dreaming up all the incredible (and yet extremely edible) creations she gets to make.
