About three years ago, I was in a pretty rough place mentally. I had been successful by many external metrics, but I felt hollow. I was on a military assignment in South Korea, and I felt compelled one evening after crying and being depressed to pick up my laptop and start writing. I've been writing now almost every day since that moment.
