I've always got something going around in my head. Reading the newspapers is always a great source, as there's so much weird stuff going on in the world, but otherwise it can just be something that somebody says. The second Vida novel starts with a scene on a campsite, which is almost directly something that happened to me - although thankfully without any murder involved.
