The moment I started telling people I was a writer was when I signed my name on the publishing contract. Until then, calling myself a writer or an author felt grandiose, as if I were trying on clothes too big for me. Finally, knowing that a major publishing house was putting their energy, money and love behind the book, I suddenly realized, "Hey, I'm an author!" That was a great feeling!! Now when people ask what I do, I say, "I write books." :-)

Your writing is so immersive Alka. Such a treasure to read. This senior woman in a small town in Ontario Canada has never travelled to exotic places like India but with your narrative I feel the warmth, smell the scents as you describe them, see the beautiful saris and wish to experience them one day. My only question is what books have inspired you to become the kind of author you are?

Monterey? My Grandmother grew up in the Cachagua in the Carmel Valley. Stories of living on the farm, protecting her little brother from a mountain lion then building a home in 1931 on Colton St. She was very active in society, the women's club and played bridge like a master. She even met and danced with John Steinbeck. After she passed, my parents lived in that house for years. Good memories!
