Goodreads asked Mark Shaiken:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Mark Shaiken All my books take place in Kansas City. My star lawyer is a bankruptcy lawyer so there are always elements of finance, and each book draws on Kansas City's rich history of Jazz, BBQ, and the American Civil War. My book ideas come from imaginary bankruptcy cases, not from real life cases I handled when I practiced bankruptcy law for almost 40 years. The ideas for my books are a kind of literary gumbo where the ingredients are my imagination, some bankruptcy law realism, complex villains you might love to hate or hate to love, Kansas City, Jazz, BBQ and something historical - maybe the Civil War, maybe Kansas City's mobsters, maybe segregation in Kansas City, or maybe a family legacy traced to the Revolutionary War.
