I love Ivan character and even more loved his book (Captain Vorpatril's Alliance). Though I enjoyed the most the scene of Cockroach central sinking and reaction of several characters to it. Simon's, Gregor's and Miles' come to mind particularly... Where did idea come from? Also, have you heard this song?: https://brookeabbey.com/track/ivan-you-idiot I love it. Only shame it ends with Civil Campaign.

Besides reading such classic nonfiction books as Why Buildings Fall Down

and a good deal of other nonfiction on engineering over the years, one of the oldest roots, oddly, was from a climactic scene from the old British comedy The Horse's Mouth, in which... is it spoilers for a film almost as old as I am? -- a bunch of justifiably distrait people unwittingly cross a rug that has been hastily thrown over the floor to conceal a large hole, and... slowly.. sink... out... of... sight...
I'll have to check out the Ivan song.

I'm a librarian at the Worcester PL (MA) and the leader of our SF Book Club. A few years ago we read A Civil Campaign and in March 2025 we'll be reading Komarr. Many SF authors have joined our meetings, including Allen Steele, Robert J. Sawyer, Walter Hunt, Adam Hamdy, Elizabeth Moon, etc. Would you like to join our online mtg in March, meet some fans, and talk about your book? Love to have you join us!

Have you seen that book 5 of the Queen's Thief series (Megan Whalen Turner) is coming out in May? I found out about this series through you. Also, I don't know if you care for podcasts, but a main character of the S-town podcast reminded me a bit of Miles if his life had taken a different tack. It's good listening and I'd love to know what you think of it should you happen to give it a try!
