Goodreads asked D.R. Rosier:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

D.R. Rosier Characters are not plot devices, nor are they driven by the plot.

Some of my earlier books show evidence of the former, not the latter. Be consistent with your characters, build them in your head by asking yourself questions of what your protagonist would do in certain situations, then stick with it. Plots are fluid, if you can't fit your original plot ideas with the protagonist, and the support characters, even the bad guys, take some time to change the plot, or find another way to accomplish it.

One of my pet peeves when reading books is when the protagonist does something completely out of character just to bring in the plot twist, or whatever else the author wants to happen.
