Goodreads asked Arlene James:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Arlene James Everyone writes in his/her own way. All anyone can teach you is how he/she does it. You have to figure out your own process. The best way to do that is to FINISH a project. Write a book to the end and let it go. Forever polishing the same "work-in-progress" is stagnation. You may come back to a book later with fresh understanding and revise or rewrite it then, but hopefully not until you've written (finished) something else.
