I think about a theme for the next story I want to write and how that theme makes me feel. Then I start messing with characters, villains, and the world. But I need to know the overarching theme of the piece before I get straight to work. Otherwise, I just make characters and then come up with the theme. Which sometimes results in characters being scraped or reworked to fit the theme.
