Goodreads asked M.A. Melby:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

M.A. Melby The last book I wrote (which is in the early stages of revision) is called "The Mad Boy of Mara" and basically, it just started with romanticizing the idea of life feeding off a corpse and the processes that repurpose that material.

I once had a food-garbage pit behind my house that had all sorts of bugs and interesting things in it, and it was really extraordinary. So, I thought of that.

I also thought, with my science background, what words would someone use if they didn't have scientific terminology but they had the knowledge? How would they describe things?

I had the most fun with that.
