Goodreads asked Matthew Silverman:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Matthew Silverman I wrote Out of a Dog's Mouth in the early 2000s when I had a puppy and while my dream job in sports publishing was going down the tubes as our company was running dry. It felt like therapy at first; then it felt like a story I really wanted to tell. I always wondered how my dogs saw things and what motivated them--besides food. Many of the incidents from the 1960s on actually happened to my family, though the last chapter--like the first--was a product of my imagination. I've always had a dog (or two), usually mutts. And I decided to donate part of the proceeds will go to animal shelters.
