What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

N. Ford Striving after a story can be discouraging. I would encourage aspiring writers to be willing to wait to be inspired instead of trying to force it or come up with some awe-inspiring story that's unique and witty and in front of the trends. That's a gerbil wheel no one wants to experience. Be willing to wait for the story to come to you, and then listen well.

I recently heard a song writer say writers need to rely on discipline instead of inspiration. Though seemingly contradictory to the statement above, this is sound advice that I hope to be able to adopt. If we can develop the discipline of writing every day, regardless of our moods, we will end up with a product every day, good writing every now and again, and great writing on the magical days for which we all hope. I am working toward this, though much behind.
