Goodreads asked Bryan Cole:

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Bryan Cole For me, absolutely it was the editing process. The initial draft writing process was fun, and let me spill ideas onto the page, but the editing... that was tremendously rewarding. Both my own self-edits (of which I did at least 20 full edits, not counting all the little ones in between - which would jump the number to over 100).

For me the editing process allowed me to take the ideas from the initial draft and polish them, add nuance, and really develop the story with connections between the events, tying everything together. I loved it.

But the professional edits were so much better! Fresh eyes that could see past my own assumptions was tremendously rewarding, both the good and the bad.

Definitely do your own edits a number of times before going to a professional - it lets them focus more on the story without being distracted by the grammar and spelling issues that an initial draft might have!
