Kkop12 asked Bonnie Garmus:

How did you come up with the character of 6:30? I fell in love with him.

Bonnie Garmus I don't base characters on people in real life (it's too constraining), but Six-Thirty was, in fact, inspired by my dog, Friday. She was smart, she knew a lot of words, and she'd been abused in her previous home. But in the story, Six-Thirty is really meant to be a voice from the other side of the animal kingdom--an anthropologist who weighs in on our poor decisions and bad behaviors. I've often wondered what Friday thought of us--and what other animals might make of our choices. Six-Thirty helped me imagine it.
