How did you come up with the character of 6:30? I fell in love with him.

I don't base characters on people in real life (it's too constraining), but Six-Thirty was, in fact, inspired by my dog, Friday. She was smart, she knew a lot of words, and she'd been abused in her previous home. But in the story, Six-Thirty is really meant to be a voice from the other side of the animal kingdom--an anthropologist who weighs in on our poor decisions and bad behaviors. I've often wondered what Friday thought of us--and what other animals might make of our choices. Six-Thirty helped me imagine it.

I am the administrator for a reading group in the Los Angeles area called The Bookie Babes. We have been together for years. This month we read Lessons in Chemistry and all 12 members gave it thumbs up. We had a rousing discussion. I personally loved so many things: the characters, the story, the mystery and the unabashedly feminist approach! Thank you for such a wonderful read. Will you publish another novel?
