The people I've advised over the years inspired me to start my first book project. A few told me I should write a book, so I did!
I started my first book five years before it was complete, doing a little bit here and there over Christmas and holiday periods. About three years in, I hit 35k words and thought, "hey, this is nearly a book; I'd better finish this!". The final 18-24 months were where I put most of the work in, and it saw the manuscript grow from 35k to 105k words (115k if you include the extensive end notes).
