I do love Fr. Barron's Advent series. He has such a gift for writing and speaking with clarity and wisdom. I love his ideas on 'waiting' -- it is so hard to wait in a culture obsessed with the 'now'.
As for advice on writing, you are on the right track! The most important thing to do is to keep at it. Do it every day. Then, join a group that will give you both encouragement and solid advice on writing craft. Better yet, join several groups. A good critique is the most useful thing any writer can receive. It can be extremely intimidating to give the work of your heart over to a friend -- and even more so to a stranger -- but it WILL make it better and that is what every writer needs. Don't be afraid to share your work and get feedback.
