Hey, why did you choose August 1986 for Eleanor and Park? Is it based on true events?

I chose that time because it was a time (and place) that I knew well. Some of the things in the book were directly inspired by my own experiences. And some are more fuzzily inspired by reality. And some are totally made up.

My favorite things about your novels is that the dialogue sounds real, which is a major plus when reading any book. I have yet to read Landline (2nd in queue for library hold), which I have heard lots of great things about! How did you make sure that the conversations didn't sound forced, over-the-top, or stiff?
