There's a whole slew of advice out there for writers. Some of it good, some bad, and some of it is neither, it's just advice that may or may not work for you. But I've found being passionate about your projects, and in love with the process, will help sustain you while you figure out the whole process.
I personally find the self editing stage incredibly frustrating, but being in love with my work and the story I was telling helped me keep going in spite of that frustration. Also having writer friends to rant to. That helped too!
