Goodreads asked Stoney M. Setzer:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Stoney M. Setzer Every summer, my family and I drive about forty-five minutes south to a peach farm in Culloden, GA that is an agritourism attraction. Our route always takes us past an old, decrepit motel that looks like the Bates Motel from "Psycho" (one of my all-time favorite movies). Interestingly enough, there are always a couple of vehicles in the parking lot, and once or twice we have seen people going in or out of the rooms. My imagination gets sparked. Who would choose to stay somewhere like that, and why? What kinds of things might happen there? Then, following through with the "Psycho" angle, I think, "What if, instead of the guy running the place being crazy like Norman Bates, the innkeeper was the normal one?" The idea for "Dead of Winter" flowed from there.
