My dad spent a couple of years working in the US as a young man. When he came back, he told my mother that something had happened there to turn him completely off of the US of A. At that time, he said he'd tell her about it someday. Until I heard this from my mother, I always thought it weird that we lived in a border city but we rarely crossed into the states. Other families would do their weekly shopping there or attend shows or go over to dine, but we never did. Unfortunately, he died a number of years ago and it looks like his secret died with him...but I still wonder what happened in Kansas to cause him to have such a disdain for the US.
