I've heard from other authors that the characters are often "watching over their shoulder" and prompting them to write more. Is this the same with you?

It depends on the character. Some are louder than others and make their displeasure about something known. With my current book a lot of secrets came out that I wasn't even expecting and it changed the entire direction of books to come.
