Believe it or not, it came from a 10 minute exercise on my Creative Writing course. It started out as a paragraph, then grew and grew! The exercise I was given involved an object, a profession and a location. I was given pendant, writer and hotel. That's all it took. Inspiration comes from all sorts of places.
