Apart from writing as much as possible. Don't ignore/ forget the sparks that you come across sometimes - 'it may be a small idea' - 'a character which appealed to you' - 'an object which captured your attention'. Let it swirl in your mind and keep reminding yourself about it, you never what that can turn into.
