That would be Cannon Fodder. I got the idea while I was in college, watching the miniseries Neverwhere with some friends. The Marquis de Carabas pulls a neat trick with a magical egg in that story. I got to brainstorming all the wonderful ways that could go wrong. The magical egg turned into a koanu nut in Cannon Fodder and the rest of the plot mushroomed around it.
