Goodreads asked Laura E. James:

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Laura E. James For me, writing is a compulsion. There's the feeling that if I don't get these things out of my imagination and onto paper, my head will explode. It won't ... at least, I don't believe it will - I've never left it long enough to find out.
There are two main reasons I love to write: I get to explore themes and ideas from the safety of my kitchen, where my desk is, and as a disabled person, with rheumatoid arthritis, I get to live vicariously through the characters, in the same way I do as a reader. However, as a writer I get to direct the characters, unless they're misbehaving and take over.
