Tamara asked Jacinta Howard:

I love that your stories have "Soundtracks".... It really provides a realness to your stories because we can associate a feeling with a song. So far, your soundtracks have been mostly, soul, R&B and hip-hop based, are there other genres of music you enjoy and how do you decide on what music to use for your characters?

Jacinta Howard I'm so glad you like the music aspect of the books! That's really a lot of me coming out in my writing. I love, love music.

So yes, I dig pretty much all genres--anything that has soul moves me, honestly.

I love jazz (John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Robert Glasper, Esperanza Spalding, Charlie Parker, etc.). I love groups like Zero 7 (their song "Destiny" is used in the trailer for Better Than Okay), The Black Keys, Radiohead, The Civil Wars and Alabama Shakes are a new favorite-- I can't stop listening to their new record, Sound & Color. Like I said, anything with soul, no matter what the genre, speaks to me.

As far as the music I used in my books, I just tried to pick songs that fit that particular situation and made sense for the characters to reference in Better Than Okay and More Than Always. Same thing for Happiness in Jersey. The Prototype is sort of a rock/soul band with hip-hop inclinations so it made sense for them to play hip-hop, rock and soul songs. But mostly the songs mentioned in the books are just songs/artists that I personally dig.
