Ella Enchanted has been my favorite book since I was ten, and I reread it every few months! On average, how long does it take you to write a book? Which comes first, the plot or the moral of the story?

There is no average, because it varies so much, from a few months to over four years. I don't think about creating a moral, which, I like to think, rises naturally out of the story for the reader to interpret. So plot comes first!

Ella Enchanted brought my reluctant reading self out of the depths of literary darkness and into the light of stories and words. I was curious, when you begin developing your stories, is there a particular way you do it, or how it comes to you? What inspires you to tell the stories you tell?
