I don't know if I can answer this question for every genre. But for me, it is about exploring. I enjoy facing a problem and working out as many solutions as I can. Writing is one way of accomplishing this. But the absolute best thing would be the readers themselves. I love hearing feedback and how my writing has influenced someone on an emotional level.
