Often my inspiration comes from an everyday situation, where my mind wanders to a "what if" scenario.
For example: not long ago I was on an airplane, and watching the man across the aisle and just ahead of me (he couldn't see me watching because of the angle). The woman next to him was sleeping, and on more than one occasion he gazed over at her, seeming to drink in her peaceful visage. As I watched, my imagination took me to a scenario where they flirted a bit before and after her slumber, and then had a fast, anonymous hook-up during a layover. (I'm working that out into a short eBook now!)
