Goodreads asked Ariella Moon:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Ariella Moon Ainslie, the main character in Spell Fire, is a teen battling obsessive-compulsive disorder and severe depression. Sadly, I know several teens (and adults) who suffer from mental illness. I've been thrilled by reviewers who have said the book helped them understand and have empathy for teens suffering from OCD. Some reviewers said Ainslie's struggle accurately reflected their own experiences.

The dragon magic and board meeting scenes in Spell Fire were inspired by personal experience. I am a shaman, and I was once a board member for a metaphysical mystery school. The pixie scene was adapted from a true incident that took place at one of our meetings.
