Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Brian Anderson A field trip. Yep, trudging along with a bunch of fourth graders through a historical village is a great way to get new ideas. Last week I visited "Old Salem" in N.C. with my son's class. Half the day I chaperoned. The other half, the kids went on a private tour so I had a few hours to grab some coffee, take photos and paint.

Now I wasn't trying to come up with ideas, but as I sketched a few buildings ideas started to spark. By the end of the day I had a tired kid, a piece of authentic rum cake (judging by the taste, it might have been an original piece) and concepts for two picture books. We'll see what happens.
