Goodreads asked Lillian I. Wolfe:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Lillian I. Wolfe A few readers have asked me where I got the idea to write "Funeral Singer". I have a good friend who sang at a friend's funeral, performing a song she had composed for him. A short time later, she was called upon to do it again for another friend at the same location. The third time this happened, one of the employees there asked if she was a funeral singer. We both laughed about it, but it became the seed that gestated into the idea for the novel.
I began to think what if my character, Gillian Foster, suddenly acquires an ability to see and talk to the recently departed while singing at a funeral? What if she was there to help them cross over? What if one didn't want to go? And that's where the premise was born.
