By writing! That sounds overly simplistic, but the first and most important step is to write, write, write. Get your practice in as if you were trying to become a concert violinist. Take a creative writing class if you can, but also encourage yourself to be curious -- the things that matter the most to you are the things you will be able to write about with the most truth and passion.
