Robin asked H.L. Walton:

I am writing my first mystery.Do you have any tips? I read crime fiction

H.L. Walton I think the best way to write a mystery is to try and point the reader in every other direction other than where you want them to look while dropping subtle hints here and there to help them solve it so when they get to the end they go "oh so that's what was with that."

Also, it may be tricky to put these clues in as you write but you can always go back over your story and insert bits here and there that can hint towards the real ending or completely throw the reader off course. That's what I did with "Behind Blue Eyes".

Hope this helps and sorry for the late reply
