Wordy Nerd asked Elizabeth Eulberg:

I once wrote you an email and wished you had answered but I did love your book Take A Bow. Here are my questions: why do you write the kinds of books you do? Is writing easy for you? What would you suggest to someone who wants to be a writer to start doing? When you begin writing your story, do you know what the ending will be? How long does it take to complete one of your books? Can you describe your writing style?

Elizabeth Eulberg Hello! I'm SO sorry I didn't respond--I'm usually pretty good about answering all my e-mails from my website!! Not sure how I missed yours! SORRY!

I write the kind of books that I would've wanted to read as a teen and adult. I wouldn't say that writing is easy for me, but it's something I enjoy. I always tell people who want to write to a) focus on the characters and round them out because if you have a character who is full formed, they end up making decisions for you, b) set a goal for the day or week and stick to it, that's the only way a book gets written: to sit down and do it!, and c) NEVER GIVE UP!

I usually know what the ending is when I start writing a story, some writers don't, but I need to know where I need to get to in order to get the characters there. I spend a lot of time thinking about characters, sometimes for a year (while I'm working on another book) before I sit down to write. When I do sit down to actually write, I already have the characters and story figured out. So it usually takes me anywhere from 4-6 months to write a draft that's good enough to send to my edit, but then we'll spend 4-6 months on the edit, line edit, copyedit, etc. So generally, I spend at least a year on every book.

I'm not sure if I can describe my writing style--I try to not dissect my writing or process that much so I don't overthink it! I just write the story I want to tell!

Good luck with your writing and again, sorry it has taken you so long to get a response from me. Happy 2016!
