Dear Mr. DeCandido, I occasionally read novels set in the Star Trek universe. Can you please recommend one or two of your favorite works in the "genre"? Sincerely, Yelp!

The two STAR TREK books of mine that I always recommend the most are THE ART OF THE IMPOSSIBLE, which was published as part of the "Lost Era" miniseries in 2003, and ARTICLES OF THE FEDERATION, which came out in 2005.
TAOTI is a sprawling 18-year epic that chronicles the Betreka Nebula Incident between the Cardassians and the Klingons referred to by Bashir and Garak in the DS9 episode "The Way of the Warrior." Characters include Curzon Dax (the previous host of the Dax symbiont to Jadzia), Ian Troi (Deanna's father), Colonel Worf (from STAR TREK VI, Worf's grandfather), Worf's parents, Kang, Kor, K'mpec, Sarek, Uhura, Elias Vaughn, Rachel Garrett, and tons more. It's one of the books I'm proudest of out of all the ones I've written, not just TREK.
AOTF is kind of a TREK version of THE WEST WING, as it follows a year in the life of Federation President Nan Bacco, specifically the year following the movie STAR TREK: NEMESIS. She deals with a variety of crises and issues, and we get an in-depth look at the Federation government.
The physical books are both out of print and hard to find, but the eBook versions are readily available.
Be aware that neither book is a standard TREK novel. They're much more political, and with a lot of obscure and/or original characters floating around. But I'm also inordinately proud of both of them, and I can also say with confidence that ARTICLES OF THE FEDERATION turned out to be a heavily influential work on works that came later, as President Bacco became a major supporting character in TREK fiction moving forward.

Can you say why Simon and Shuster hasn't asked you to write another Start Trek novel since 2009? For the past couple of years I have gotten really intensely excited about reading Star Trek novels; I'm embarrassed by how many I have devoured in just the past 12 months or so. But it's a joy and informs my fandom of the multiple series. I attribute that to reading your rewatch page and one of your novels. Thank you!

If you could travel to any fictional book world, where would you go and what would you do there?
