Hi Ruta, Between Shades of Grey is one of my favorite books, it really touched a core inside me, as Romanians, we have too a complicated history with Russia and communism. When you write a book do you know from the beginning where it will lead (more precisely do you have a plan from the start with the characters or you go where the story leads?) Do you ever plan on coming to Romania?

Hello Cornelia!
Yes, I believe I will be coming to Romania for a book appearance in September or October. Please check my website www.rutasepetys.com for event details as I will post the information as soon as it's confirmed.
In terms of your question, since I write historical fiction, history provides a general outline for my novels. I spend a lot of time thinking about the characters, what those characters want, and what obstacles they will overcome to get what they want. I love the creative process so I don't outline too heavily. I like to leave room to surprise myself while writing.
Hope to see you in Romania soon!

As a lover of young adult and historical fiction, you are one of my 'must-read-everything-they-write' authors. In a couple of months you are coming to my school to participate in our big read and I couldn't be happier about it. My question is: Do decide on your historical timeframe first and then look for the narrative or do you envision the character and decide where is history they best fit?

Hi Ruta! I just wanted to say I loved your book. It was definitely informative (without being too dry), and at the same time, it was a real tear-jerker. My question is, where do you get the idea for your books? Also, what is the process that you usually go through in order to write a book?
