Goodreads asked Edward Hancock II:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Edward Hancock II My advice is somewhat controversial. My advice is to listen to all of the supposed experts. Find out all the supposed "rules" the supposed "experts" live and write by... and then find out which of these supposed "rules" You can successfully break in the telling of a good story. For example, many "experts" will tell you today, "Don't use those -LY words!" Yet if you read Dean Koontz, Stephen King, John Grisham, J.D. Robb, Stephanie Meyer, J.K. Rowling and many other successful authors, they all use those Horrible "-LY Words." How about you just write a good story and let your voice find itself. Use good grammar. But don't write cookie cutter stories the "Experts" would have you write.
