That is a hard one. Some are sparked by some tiny event such as an overhead comment, or by something that happens to me or to somebody I know, or else a newspaper headline or magazine article. Others just arrive from no particular place.
Of late much of my short fiction has been commissioned for themes anthologies, but I write others just for fun. Whatever the reason for writing it most of my fiction will revolve around folklore in some fashion or other.
